It is amazing what happens when a community full of kind-hearted people with big appetites can achieve when they come together. On January 19th, we joined Ferguson Enterprises and The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce in hosting the 2017 Souper Bowl Throwdown.
The intent of this event was to bring the community together to raise money and collect non-perishable food items for the Interfaith Food Pantry. We were thrilled with the incredible turnout; a whopping 175 people joined us.
By the end of the night an entire pick-up truckload of food had been collected. Brad Ewing explained, “It was wonderful to see so many people from our community come to together to do good. Everyone genuinely enjoyed themselves and the soup, while also supporting an important local organization.” The silent auction, made possible by generous donations from local vendors, raised $2,700.
As part of the event, we were fortunate to have seven amazing local eateries compete for the bragging rights of being voted “Best Soup” of the night (hence the Souper Bowl). The winner of the night was Blue Ridge Catering for their delectable “Butternut Squash Soup.” Not far behind them were Preston’s “Salmon Chowder” and PK’s “Cajun Chicken and Broccoli” soup. Are we making you hungry yet?
While three winners did rise to the top, the competition was fierce. We are extremely thankful to all the restaurants who competed and treated us to their incredible tastes. We want to extend our sincere thanks to Top of the Stairs, Hethwood Market, Holiday Inn (Christiansburg), The Farmhouse, Blue Ridge Catering, PK’s, and Preston’s at the River Course.
Each and every person who attended affirms what we know to be true about the Blacksburg community; it is an incredibly special place. Thank you for your generosity, as you joined us in supporting an organization that does tremendous good. We look forward to future opportunities to come together and serve this community we love, along side the people that make it so wonderful.
