How to Spruce Up Your Home for Spring

‘Tis the season for spring cleaning! As you polish the floors, dust the awnings, and scrub down the counters, are you wishing for kitchen hardware and appliances that require a little less elbow grease to clean? Here are a few things to keep in mind during your next remodel:

Smooth Surfaces:

Selecting cabinetry isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s also about usability and practicality. Ornately carved cabinet faces are beautiful, but very difficult to clean. Cabinets with flat doors and baked-on finishes are easy to clean, as are painted cabinets with high-gloss finish.

Hardware:

Hardware choices make a difference in cleaning, too. Pulls and handles help keep your cabinets clean when your fingers are messy. To keep it as clean as can be, look for hardware that can be opened using only one or two fingers. The less mess your cabinets encounter day-to-day, the easier the annual deep-clean will be.

Easy-Clean Appliances:

When selecting new appliances, remember that you’ll need to clean them, too. A range with steam-cleaning, for example, allows for easier cleaning of oven interiors. Wood-panel dishwashers not only look modern and fresh, but also prevent pesky fingerprint marks. You can even get newer refrigerators that will keep your food fresher for longer.

Flooring:

Picking flooring materials for your kitchen is a big decision. It’s critical to consider how much care and cleaning is required for each option, and where you plan on putting it. Tile, for example, is easy to clean and incredibly durable; We recommend using a higher quality grout to help prevent dirt and grime from staining the grout. Vinyl is also a durable, easy-clean choice, especially for homeowners with kids and pets.

In kitchens, dirt likes to collect at the right-angle seam of the floor and the toe-kick of the wall (usually underneath your cabinets). Replacing those angles with a rolling edge–where the floor curves up to the toe-kick–and your floors will be much easier to clean.
