The Heart of the Home: Ewing Wins Best Kitchen in 2018

Have you heard the news? Ewing Building & Remodeling was honored with Best Kitchen in 2018 from the New River Valley Home Builders Association!

This award is an incredible honor for our company, but it has even deeper meaning for Debbie Ewing. The award-winning kitchen isn’t just a kitchen; it’s her kitchen.

“I was surprised, but also very happy that our peers in this industry thought so much of our remodeling project,” she said. “I am just so thankful for this and the opportunity to even be considered for this award. It’s very special, not only for our team but for myself.”

Debbie explained that this kitchen is her space, more than anywhere else in the house. Among the pots & pans and oven & burners, kneading dough and stirring soup, is where she feels most at home. She’s known to be an avid cook, which inspired this dream kitchen remodel; she longed for a place where her family & friends could come and cook together.

In the short time since completing the remodel, the Ewing kitchen has already proven to be a place of community & healing for the Ewing family. As they gathered to celebrate the life and mourn the loss of Debbie’s mother–Mary Coppino Wood–the family found healing and solace in a spontaneous biscuit and gravy showdown. Having more counters, more space, & more seating allowed for this beautiful coming together in honor of the best biscuit and gravy maker the Ewings have ever known.

“When they presented the award,” Debbie recounts, “They said that they looked for a kitchen that represented the heart of the home. And that struck a chord with me, because this kitchen is the heart of our home. Not only is it my space and where I love to work, but it’s where, when people come home, where we all gather.”

Winning this award is so much more than just an accolade for Debbie. It is a manifestation of Ewing family company values: a beautiful space built for community, made by the family for the family. For Debbie, this symbolizes her families–both the company family and the relational family–coming together and finding community and commonality in her kitchen. From designers & contractors working to make their vision a reality, to her grandchildren helping break in new countertops with biscuit making, this kitchen was built to hold Debbie’s heart. To have their peers see the love poured into every tile, feature, and light fixture; and for their peers to see how this space was made to gather family together, that is the true honor.

Debbie wishes to thank: her dream team of designers, Sara Jones and Edith-Anne Duncan; Jason Ewing, project manager; Paul Ewing; and all the hardware, appliance, and fixture distributors & designers who cooperated to create this beautiful kitchen.
